London City's Winless Streak Continues2009-06-19![]() Without a win since August 2007, local squad squandered chances in loss to Trois-Rivieres By MORRIS DALLA COSTA
There was no new news from Cove Road field last night. London City lost again, this time 2-0 to the Trois-Rivieres Attak in front of about 100 fans. It was the 33rd game in succession without a regular season win for City, a streak that's been ongoing since August 2007. There isn't much new to say about that, either. City played well for a while but then disappeared for long stretches of time. "We've got the players to play, we've just got to put 90 minutes together," said City midfielder Patrick Bueno. "We got a good 20 minutes then break down for five and that's when they put it away. We have to play 45 minutes each half and take each half at a time." Bueno is one of the newest members of City. A North Carolina native, he plays university soccer in Kentucky. He has been one of the best players for City this year, a tireless athlete who doesn't mind getting involved in the play. He looked good last night against the Attak. The Attak put a good product on the field every year. Last night they arrived in London with 13 players because several of their players were kept home by school exams. The Attak are a feeder team to the Montreal Impact of the USL. Several of the Attak graduated to play with the big club. The graduation's lowered the average age of the Attak by four years, to 19. With only one returning player, this Attak team look very little like the team that made the CSL final last year. Once again, City held its own against the Quebec team. Once again, City's forwards had trouble finishing. "We could have gone up in the first half," Bueno said. "Then they get that one lucky shot and everyone puts their head down. When you get on a streak like this everyone puts their head down after one goal and it's hard to come back." They came out of the first half trailing 1-0 but had most of the quality scoring chances. In the sixth minute Sergio Siguenza fired a rocket from a 25-yard free kick that looked as if it was going to give City the lead. Attak netminder Simon Lagarde got to it to tip the ball away. Minutes later City's Juan Londonog was given a great ball by Andrew Loague. Londonog was alone about 10-yards out and somehow fired over the net. It's the kind of thing that comes back to bite you. With the half coming to a close, Reda Agourram scored a terrific goal for the Attak. The ball came to him just outside the penalty area. With his back to the net, he managed to turn and fired a shot that just went off a defender and ended up under the bar. Baca was a last-minute replacement for the other three City goalies who couldn't make it to the game. Anthony Santilli couldn't attend the game because of personal commitments. Chris Davis was in Jamaica playing in the World Cup beach soccer competition. Third goaltender Scott Mueller was ill. Still, City had to be happy with the way they had played. Disaster struck early in the second half, though. In the 46th minute, an Attak cross wasn't cleared by the City defence. It dropped to the feet of Agourram. Without hesitation he took the ball on the fly and fired it into the net. From that point on, City had nothing to offer. "You've got to keep going," Bueno said. "It's tough always going uphill instead of starting uphill and going down." |
